"Don't mind our bad website, our services are really good," is like saying "Don't mind the fact there are rats running around the restaurant, the food is really good."

Unfortunately that is not how we percive things in today's society. We judge the outsides of a company and assume that must be similar on the inside: that is why marketing is a Multi-Billion dollar industry.

We can't help but perceive things to be reality: "She drives a nice car, so she must be rich" even though the car is leased and she missed the last 2 payments.We also can't help but perceive things to be reality: Bad websites drive away potential clients.

For some reason, we like to assume the best about others when it's appealing to us. Just like when we dress up, comments such as "Wow, what a suit. You look professional." Note that one looks professional, but is not necessary a professional. It is a nice compliment that has perception that goes with it.

Just like what does your business card say about you, your phone message, hair cut, car you drive, website, etc.

People in position where they trust each other tend to dress a like (lawyers, business people, politicians) because dressed-well people trust other dress-well people.

Therefore, what makes you think that it's not the same for websites? Better looking websites are more trustworthy than under-dressed or poor looking ones.
